Innovation Challenge FrieslandCampina

Are you active in circular process technology, residual stream valorisation or resource recovery? Do you have an application in which a sodium phosphate-rich residual stream can be utilised in a high-value way? Would you like to work with FrieslandCampina on a technically and economically feasible, scalable solution?
At FrieslandCampina’s production site in Bedum, a sodium phosphate-rich residual stream is generated during the removal of phosphate from process water. This stream is currently processed in a reliable manner, within the applicable operational and regulatory frameworks. At the same time, FrieslandCampina wants to explore whether this stream can be utilised in a higher-value way.
FrieslandCampina is therefore looking for innovative technologies and applications that can enable this residual stream, with or without limited pre-treatment, to be utilised in a high-value way that is both technically and economically feasible. The organisation is explicitly looking beyond its own sector and is open to new perspectives, applications and value chain partnerships. The central question is how this residual stream can become part of a sustainable and future-proof application, without creating a new residual problem.
Would you like to learn more about FrieslandCampina’s challenge? Please read the full challenge description in the downloads on this page. It contains more details about the challenge and the assessment criteria. If you still have questions after reading the documents, please email info@challengebase.nl. We will forward your question to the experts involved.
Are you ready to take on the challenge?
FrieslandCampina invites startups, scale-ups and innovative SMEs to submit a proposal for this innovation challenge. The organisation is looking for solutions that are sufficiently mature from a technological perspective, fit the nature of the stream, and offer realistic market application potential.
Does your organisation have a technology, application or collaboration proposal that could enable this sodium phosphate-rich residual stream to be utilised in a high-value way? If so, FrieslandCampina would like to hear from you. After an initial selection round, the most suitable parties will be invited for a more detailed introduction, pitch and site visit in Bedum. FrieslandCampina will then explore which party or parties could move forward towards a potential collaboration.
Deadline
Applications can be submitted until Friday, 12 June 2026, via the form at the bottom of this page.
