Innovation challenge SITURN

Are you active in industrial cleaning or circular steel processing? Do you have a solution for contaminated steel from gas treatment installations? Would you like to work with SITURN on a circular, responsible and scalable processing route that preserves as much material value as possible?
SITURN is a collaboration between NAM, Arcadis and WellGear for the responsible clean-up of former oil and gas production systems in the Netherlands. Within this extensive operation, above-ground installations are gradually cleaned and dismantled in accordance with applicable safety and environmental requirements. After which the steel becomes available for further processing and reuse. Part of this steel presents a specific challenge. It is contaminated with mercury, which means that the next steps in the chain are not straightforward. For SITURN, it is essential that this material is processed and used safely, responsibly and in a controllable way, while preserving as much material value as possible. Within SITURN and its existing partnerships, substantial knowledge has already been built up about the treatment and processing of this steel. A technically feasible and controllable route is available. At the same time, this approach requires intensive treatment and involves secondary streams, transport movements and specialist capacity. That is why SITURN is exploring which additional processing routes could contribute to an approach that remains controllable, is more scalable within the overall operation and offers prospects for circular use while preserving as much material value as possible.

Are you ready to take on the challenge?
SITURN invites startups, scale-ups, innovative SMEs and specialised technology and processing companies to submit a proposal for this innovation challenge. The challenge is part of one of the most extensive industrial decommissioning operations ever undertaken in the Netherlands. At the same time, there is international interest in how such challenges are being addressed. Does your organisation have a technology, processing route or application that could contribute to this challenge? Then we invite you to submit a proposal. After the first selection round, the most promising candidates will be invited to further explain their proposal and meet the parties involved in SITURN.
Deadline
Applications can be submitted until Friday 18 September via the form at the bottom of this page. Please note that the first introductory meetings will take place beginning of Octobre 2026.
