The challenge of the Province of Fryslân
Fryslân is home to a large goose population. While their presence is a familiar part of the landscape, it also causes increasing damage to agricultural land. To mitigate this, targeted population management is necessary. When animals are culled as part of population control, the guiding principle is to ensure they are given a valuable destination — a principle widely supported, including by hunters.
Yet finding meaningful uses for all culled geese remains a challenge. Existing outlets are limited, often local, small-scale, and not structurally viable.
That’s why the Province of Fryslân is seeking innovative solutions to ensure geese culled through population management are put to good use. But the journey from a culled goose to a plate—or another useful destination—is complex and full of bottlenecks.
The challenge: enable more effective population management with less waste—by creating a seamless, scalable chain from culling to end product that works for all stakeholders.
